Foundation Governors
‘Keeping Christ at the centre of our schools’
School governors are the largest voluntary body in the country. They provide a vital service to the community and help shape the work of schools and the future of our young people.
Foundation Governors in Catholic schools are entrusted by the Bishop with the ministry of school governance to act in recognition of the love of Christ for all members of the school community and one another.
They have a vital role to play to ensure that every child gets the best possible education in a safe and caring environment, acting as ‘critical friends’ and setting the strategic direction of the school.
Work with us As a Governor
Would you like to have a positive impact on the education of our young people?
As a school governor, you would have the opportunity to contribute to the spiritual and academic development of students while upholding the values and traditions of the Catholic faith and shaping the future of Catholic education. As a Foundation governor you would have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in a role that is rewarding, challenging and impactful.
Who can be a governor of a Catholic school?
Becoming a governor does not require any specific qualifications. Our schools seek individuals who are practising Catholics, committed to their faith, eager to share their expertise and life experiences as well as their time. Foundation Governors provide support, challenge and guidance to school leaders, ensuring the best education for our children. Passion, faith and commitment is what is needed.
What is the process of becoming a governor for a Catholic school?
Foundation Governors are appointed by the Bishop and represent his education policy. You can nominate yourself for consideration. Your Parish Priest, a Headteacher, a Chair of Governors, or another member of the Catholic community may have already encouraged you to do so. The nomination form can be obtained from the Clerk of Governors of a specific school or from the Diocesan Education Service (education@prcdtr.org.uk) Your application will then be processed and your active Catholic faith verified as well as completion of mandatory safeguarding checks.
What is the commitment of being a governor for a Catholic school?
A Foundation Governor should be prepared to attend at least one governing body meeting per term and have read through the documentation circulated prior to meetings so that they can play a useful part in discussions and decisions.
A Foundation Governor may also be appointed to one or more committees and may be asked to take on a “Link Governor” role which entails a responsibility for overseeing a particular area of school life. The committees will concentrate on key areas including finance, curriculum, pupil progress, and site management. Additionally, Foundation Governors are invited to attend regular training sessions run by the Plymouth Diocese Education Service, Plymouth CAST and the school.
