“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”
Proverbs 3:5-6

The Diocese of Plymouth has a dual role. It is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, led locally by the bishop, and it also operates as a registered Charitable Trust under UK law.

As a Diocese, it is responsible for carrying out the Church’s mission across Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. As a Charitable Trust, it must also meet all legal responsibilities, including those relating to employment, finances, property, health and safety and safeguarding.

To fulfil both its spiritual mission and its legal duties, the Diocese has appropriate structures and processes in place. These ensure that Canon law is followed while also complying fully with civil law, supported by professional staff and dedicated volunteers. Wherever possible, the same people and bodies oversee both areas of responsibility.

This work is coordinated through the Diocesan Curia. The Curia supports the bishop in overseeing the mission of the Church across the Diocese and ensures that the Diocese meets its legal and charitable obligations. Its role is to support parishes and their many volunteers, helping them to carry out the Church’s mission effectively while meeting the requirements of civil law.
